The Education Department of the Ateneo de Manila University is committed to serve the Philippine educational system through graduate education and research programs, to empower educators through an understanding of their profession and vocation, and to lead in influencing educational policies and directions.
The Department offers a graduate degree program grounded on sound pedagogical theories and on the Jesuit tradition of intellectual excellence and service for other. The Department also undertakes research in various areas of education and conducts retraining programs for education practitioners through the Ateneo Teacher Center. It harnesses the expertise of professionals and practitioners from the other units of the University and the Ateneo system.
Listed below are the Education Department’s offerings in Graduate degree programs for the School of Social Sciences:
Basic Education Teaching
This program examines the theory, practice, and current research in pedagogy, curriculum development, psychology of learning, and assessment and evaluation. Students learn to explore educational materials, resources, and media to enhance student learning. Numerous opportunities for further specialization in teaching methodologies in their respective subject areas are provided.
The Basic Education Teaching major degree program is offered in both thesis (36 units) and non-thesis (42 units) options.
Non-thesis students are given the opportunity to link theory and research with current practice as they engage in fieldwork in a basic education setting.
Thesis students are prepared to conduct scholarly research that will address relevant issues in their own school setting.
Educational Administration
This program prepares current and prospective school leaders to meet the professional demands of educational leadership. Graduate coursework develops competencies related to effective leadership and educational management practices, as well as allows students to explore the theoretical and practical aspects of curriculum development, teaching and learning, and the supervision of instruction. Exposure to research about current realities, emerging trends, and issues in various aspects of educational administration ensures their continuing growth and effectiveness as school leaders. Students are prepared to conduct scholarly research that will address relevant issues in their own school setting.
The major in Educational Administration degree program is offered as a thesis course with 36 units.
Guidance and Counseling
This program prepares students to become proficient in the various aspects of school guidance and counseling. The course offers graduate coursework in the development and management of relevant and functional school guidance programs and services; the diagnosis of their students’ educational, vocational, and personal needs and concerns; the implementation of appropriate counseling techniques and intervention programs; psychological measurement and evaluation; and research methodology. Students are prepared to conduct scholarly research in the areas of guidance and counseling that will address relevant issues in their own school setting
The major in Guidance and Counseling degree program is offered as a thesis course with 36 units.
A non-thesis option is also offered under Master in Education major in Guidance and Counseling with 42 units.
Information Technology Integration
This program prepares students to use a wide variety of technological tools and media to support teaching and learning. It covers the production and management of learning resources and educational media and the application of technology to enhance the teaching-learning environment. Students are prepared to conduct scholarly research that will address relevant issues related to the use of educational media and technology in their own school setting.
The major in Information Technology Integration degree program is offered as a thesis course with 39 units.
Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language
The Masters in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language Program aims to develop professional high-caliber Chinese language teachers for K-12 schools and universities. It is offered by the Ateneo de Manila Univeristy Department of Education and Chinese Studies Program in collaboration with Sun Yat-Sen University, Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the Ateneo Confucius Institute.
This Program consists of graduate level subjects in education, advanced Chinese language, and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The Program also offers an option to study in China during the Intercession Semester of the first year with subsidy. Furthermore, partial scholarships and subsidies for textbooks related to Teaching Chinese will be available to students.
The Masters in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language is offered as a 42 unit course
